When immigrants and refugees resettle to a new home country, they benefit from adult learning and education (ALE) programs such as language classes, employment training, and citizenship support. While there has been much research conducted on these programs individually, few attempts have been made to look at the bigger picture. We must ask: How are larger systems such as funding programs, governance structures, and networks of providers having an impact on immigrants and refugees? How can isolated adult learning programs connect with and learn from other adult learning programs?
That’s where the ALE-in-ISI Partnership comes in. The Adult Learning and Education in Immigrant Settlement and Integration (ALE-in-ISI) is a partnership between faculty at the University of British Columbia and the Leibniz Centre for Lifelong Learning in Germany. The goal of this partnership is to create a network of adult learning program providers, facilitate their knowledge exchange and mutual learning, and conduct research into larger systems and policies that support adult learning for immigrants and refugees.
